Methodology for Measuring Taste and Odor Preference of Rodents

چکیده
Taste enhancers and olfactory attractants are needed to improve b a i t acceptance for rodent control, but most methods for e v a l u a t i n g preference for taste and odor s t i m u l i are not s u i t a b l e for screening l a r ge numbers of such compounds. This paper describes two automated preference testers designed for t h i s purpose. The taste preference apparatus is based on the p r i n c i p l e of the brief-exposure, foods-together technique, whereby the animal b r i e f l y samples each food alone, in alternate sequence, before the two foods are presented together, in a l te r na te positions. The odor preference tester is based on an o pe n -f i el d maze, whereby the test animal samples each of four odor sources before preference behavior is recorded. Both devices are f u l l y automated (in both operation and data recording), are free of position bias, and produce preference determinations in relatively l i t t l e time; neither requires special t r a i n i n g of test animals. The design, operation, and a p p l i c a t i o n of each apparatus in rodent control is discussed and i l l u s t r a t e d .

Flavor Preference Learning Increases Olfactory and Gustatory Convergence onto Single Neurons in the Basolateral Amygdala but Not in the Insular Cortex in Rats
The basolateral amygdala (BLA) and the insular cortex (IC) represent two major areas for odor-taste associations, i.e. flavor integration. This learning may require the development of convergent odor and taste neuronal activation allowing the memory representation of such association. Yet identification of neurons that respond to such coincident input and the effect of flavor experience on odor...
متن کاملOlfaction in Rodent Control
A brief survey is presented of current knowledge on olfaction in rodents and the various roles that odors may play in modifying rodent behavior. Some species at least uti lize olfactory cues: to locate food items; to recognize their mother and mates; to mark territory; as an involuntary population density regulator; possibly to recognize predators; as a warning cue against a repellent or toxic ...
متن کاملFood and Food-Odor Preferences in Dogs: A Pilot Study
Evaluation of food palatability and preference is of great importance to the pet food industry. One common technique for evaluating palatability is a 2-bowl test in which 2 products are offered simultaneously and food consumption is measured. This yields clear results with dogs trained to routinely conduct such comparisons, but it is less clear how this extends to untrained pet dogs. In additio...
متن کاملObese individuals have higher preference and sensitivity to odor of chocolate.
The worldwide epidemic of obesity has inspired a great deal of research into its causes and consequences. It is therefore surprising that so few studies have examined such a fundamental part of eating behavior: our sense of smell. The aim of the present study was to examine the differences in olfaction in obese and nonobese individuals. Participants (n = 40) categorized as obese (body mass inde...
متن کاملTemporary basolateral amygdala lesions disrupt acquisition of socially transmitted food preferences in rats.
Lesions of the basolateral amygdala (BLA) have long been associated with abnormalities of taste-related behaviors and with failure in a variety of taste- and odor-related learning paradigms, including taste-potentiated odor aversion, conditioned taste preference, and conditioned taste aversion. Still, the general role of the amygdala in chemosensory learning remains somewhat controversial. In p...
